Ashland, VA - Randolph-Macon Baseball loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but could not push across a tying run as Rowan took game one of the three game series 3-2 Sunday afternoon. The second game was halted with Rowan leading 13-11 in the top of the ninth and will resume on Monday, February 25th at 1:30.
R-MC's defense helped maintain the edge by turning three double plays over the first three innings.
Rowan broke through in the top of the fourth on a Sean Kelly sacrifice fly that scored Mark Benak from third.
The score remained tied until the Profs pushed across two runs to go up 3-1 in the sixth. Kelly drove in a run with an RBI single to right before Eric Perez brought home Kelly with a sacrifice fly.
Austin Carpenter pulled the Jackets within one after driving in Mark Heideman with a groundout. Trentham and Weymouth then drew walks to load the bases with two outs but R-MC could not bring home the tying run. RU took the seven inning contest 3-2.
Weymouth paced Randolph-Macon with a single, an RBI and a walk. Helbig is saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three.
Benak had three of Rowan's four hits including two doubles. Kyle Brown earns the win after one and a third innings of relief.
The Profs pushed across two runs on four hits in the second inning of game two but the Jackets responded with three in the bottom half, two coming on a Trentham double to left center.
Rich Powelson drove in two runs in the top of the third to cap a three run rally that put RU back on top 5-3.
Randolph-Macon sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs on three hits and benefited from four walks and a hit by a pitch. Weymouth highlighted the inning with a three run double to left center to extend the Jackets lead to 10-5.
Rowan answered with four in the fourth and a fifth inning three run homerun off the bat of Casey Grimes to retake the lead 12-10.
After scoreless sixth and seventh innings, RU pushed across a run with a sacrifice fly in the eight and R-MC's Travis Lodge RBI single pushed the score to 13-11.
The game was then halted due to darkness following the end of the eighth inning. Game 2 will be resumed in the top of the ninth Monday, February 25th at 1:30 pm. The two teams will then square off in the final game of the three game series at Estes Park.
