ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) was named Rookie of the Year in the state of Virginia as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released the 2014 College Division All-State Baseball Team.
Maiolo and Glenn McLaughlin (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) were voted First Team All-State, while Meiners and Jake Bram (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) earned Second Team All-State honors.
R-MC tied Christopher Newport for the most overall selections with four.
Maiolo missed his freshman season due to injury. He started 36 games and batted .397 (eighth in ODAC) and was third in the ODAC with 47 RBI. Maiolo was fourth in the ODAC with seven home runs, sixth with 13 doubles, sixth with a .652 slugging percentage and seventh with 92 total bases. Maiolo was First Team All-South Region, First Team All-ODAC and ODAC Rookie of the Year.
McLaughlin led the ODAC with eight saves and was second with 19 appearances. He allowed 15 hits in 20 innings with seven walks and 26 strikeouts. McLaughlin had an ERA of 1.35 and opponents hit .195 against him. McLaughlin was a First Team All-ODAC selection.
Meiners was Third Team All-South Region. He was fourth in the ODAC with a batting average of .423 and with 24 walks. Meiners was second in the conference with an on-base percentage of .529. He appeared in 32 games with 31 starts.
Bram led the ODAC with 20 appearances and was fifth with a 2.08 ERA. He was 3-1 out of the bullpen, allowing 45 hits in 39 innings with seven walks and 24 strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets went 24-15 overall and finished second in the ODAC with a 14-6 conference mark. R-MC earned its ninth straight conference tournament appearance.
VaSID is comprised of sports information or athletics communications professionals from intercollegiate institutions throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Membership is open to any individual affiliated with one of the state’s institutions at the NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, community college and independent levels, provided that individual’s area of responsibility lies within the realm of sports information.
