Baseball Receives Votes In D3baseball.com/NCBWA Preseason Poll

Baseball team looks out over field

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon baseball received two votes into the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Preseason Poll, it was announced this week.  The Yellow Jackets spent much of the 2017 season on the Top 25 poll as they worked through a 26-15 season while going 13-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Randolph-Macon began last season ranked tenth in the same preseason poll. The Yellow Jackets finished a strong season in the ODAC Tournament, with a defeat of the No. 1 seeded Shenandoah Hornets before losing to eventual ODAC Champion and Division III College World Series participant, No. 6 seed Roanoke.

The team will face five other squads receiving votes in the poll. The Yellow Jackets will take on No. 12 Shenandoah in Winchester on Saturday April 21. They will host the defending ODAC Champions, the Roanoke Maroons on Saturday, April 28. Alvernia and Rowan, which both received votes into the poll, will visit Ashland on February 24 and March 3-4 respectively. The Yellow Jackets will visit Catholic on Wednesday, April 11 at 3:30.

Randolph-Macon has seen much success in its baseball program in recent years. In 2016, The Yellow Jackets went 35-8-1. R-MC set a program record for victories in a season and the senior class collected 108 wins over the past four years, the first class in program history to pass the century mark in victories. The Yellow Jackets won the ODAC title and reached the regional finals for the first time in program history. R-MC was ranked seventh in the final American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Baseball Poll, and eighth in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25. This was the first time that the Yellow Jackets finished the year in the Top Ten. R-MC was ranked in the two polls throughout the 2016 season and rose as high as No. 2 in the D3baseball.com poll.

Head Coach Ray Hedrick is entering into his 14th season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets program. R-MC will open the season at home with RPI on Saturday, February 17 at 2:00 PM and play the Engineers on Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
