ASHLAND, Va. - Both the R-MC IHSA team and the Eventing team had strong showings at their weekend events! The IHSA team was at the VCU hosted show and ended the day in third place overall. The Eventing team was in Purcellville, Va. at the Surefire Horse Trials with three riders competing on Saturday and Sunday.
Eliza vanderWoude started the day off on the right foot in the Open division, taking second place and also qualified for Regionals in the Intermediate Fences division. Staying on point, newcomer Madison Bullard '21 won her first-ever outing in the IHSA over fences. The Yellow Jackets continued to rack up the points with the following riders bringing home second place ribbons: Brianna Shaw '21, Emily Ploppert '19, Julia Bain '20, Katie Adams '21, Madeline Urbanic '20 and Shelby Powers '20. Julia Bain also qualified for Regionals at this first show of the season both on the flat and over fences.
"Every one of these riders is putting in their homework during the week and it shows," said Hunt Seat coach John West. "I can't tell you how excited I am about the future of this team. This was a fantastic first outing in our very competitive region and we are looking forward to the rest of our schedule this fall."
Madlen Lesesne '19, Carsan Rucci '21 and Vanessa Stoltzfus '20 traveled to Surefire Farm with their horses to compete this weekend. Vanessa brought home a sixth in the Training Rider division and Madlen was fifth in her Beginner Novice division. The team is making great strides with the new eventing coach Ashley Adams, who, in addition to coaching the team, rode her own young horse in his first USEA event this weekend as well.
Next on tap for the Eventing team is the Collegiate Challenge at the Tryon Riding and Hunt Club Horse Trials in Tryon, N.C. in October. The IHSA team will compete against the 10 teams in our region at VCU again this weekend. The team would love for supporters to come out, see what we do and cheer on the Yellow Jackets.
