ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon defense held Hampden-Sydney to its lowest point total since the season opener as the Yellow Jackets posted a 14-9 ODAC victory over the Tigers Saturday afternoon in The Game in front of 6,227 fans at Day Field.
R-MC (4-6, 3-4 ODAC) won its third straight to close the season. The Yellow Jackets have beaten H-SC (6-4, 4-3) two consecutive times and four out of the past five meetings.
The Yellow Jackets took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards for the game's first score as freshman quarterback Joe McBride (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) took it in the final two yards to give R-MC a 7-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets picked up all 70 yards on the ground. Freshman Eric Hoy (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) carried the first four plays of the drive for 53 yards.
Following an exchange of punts, the Tigers faced second and 13 on their own 19. Freshman J.J. Hill (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming) picked off an Edgar Moore pass and ran it in from 31 yards out to give the Yellow Jackets a 14-0 lead with 8:06 remaining in the first period.
The R-MC defense again stopped H-SC, but a mishandled punt by the Yellow Jackets gave the Tigers the ball on the R-MC 4. The Yellow Jacket defense kept H-SC out of the end zone and the Tigers had to settle for a 20-yard field goal to trail 14-3 with 5:03 left in opening quarter.
H-SC scored on the first play of the second quarter as the ODAC's leading rusher, Kyree Koonce, streaked 74 yards for a touchdown. The pass attempt on the extra point was incomplete as R-MC clung to a 14-9 advantage.
The Tigers drove to the R-MC 1 late in the second quarter, but a lost fumble thwarted the drive.
Midway through the third quarter, H-SC moved the ball to the R-MC 10, but a missed 27-yard field goal kept the score at 14-9. Later in the third, the Tigers drove to the R-MC 31. Hill picked off a pass in the end zone to halt the drive.
H-SC's first drive of the fourth quarter found the Tigers with first and goal from the three. Junior Xavier Strothers (Durham, N.C./Jordan) tackled Koonce for a loss of two yards. On second and five, an H-SC pass put the ball on the R-MC 2. Moore fumbled the snap on third down and fell on it to keep it H-SC ball. On fourth down, senior Tom Buchanan (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) broke through and tackled Koonce for a loss of six as the Yellow Jackets took over with 10:54 remaining. The Tigers would have three more possessions, but would not cross midfield as R-MC recorded the 14-9 victory.
R-MC was held to 94 rushing yards and 209 yards of total offense. The Yellow Jackets did hold the advantage in time of possession, 35:14-24:46. R-MC held the ball for at least 35 minutes in each of its final four games in 2015.
The nine points by the Tigers were their lowest output since dropping a 35-3 decision to Wabash to kick off the season.
