Frederick Rushes for 218 Yards as R-MC Football Edges Averett 17-13

DANVILLE, Va. - Junior Tre Frederick (Angier, N.C./West Johnston) carried the ball 30 times for 218 yards as the Randolph-Macon football team pulled out a 17-13 win at Averett Saturday evening.

It was the third career 200-yard rushing game for Frederick.

Junior Joe McBride (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) completed 14 of 24 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets (2-0).

The Cougars (0-2) snared an interception on the R-MC 30 late in the first quarter and needed just two running plays to reach the end zone. AU took a 7-0 lead with 2:36 left in the first period.

Early in the second quarter, R-MC put together a 70-yard scoring drive to tie the score. McBride hit junior Sean McDonald (Boyce, Va./Clarke County) on a 38-yard pass to move the Yellow Jackets into AU territory. McBride found Frederick on a 12-yard TD pass as R-MC tied it 7-7 with 10:33 left in the first half.

AU moved to the R-MC 12 on its next possession, but sophomore Bryan Sullivan (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) forced and recovered a fumble to thwart the drive. The score would remain 7-7 at intermission.

On its third possession of the second half, the Yellow Jackets had a 63-yard scoring drive to take their first lead. McBride hit McDonald with a 14-yard scoring strike as R-MC led 14-7 with 1:06 remaining in the third quarter.

The Cougars picked up one first down on its next possession, but was forced to punt and R-MC took over on its 23 with 14:04 remaining in the final period. The Yellow Jackets ate 7:17 off the clock, moving 66 yards in 13 plays before freshman Chris Vidal (Wake, N.C./Wake Forest) hit a 28-yard field goal to put R-MC on top 17-7 with 6:47 left.

AU quickly responded, driving 71 yards in six plays for its second touchdown. The extra point was blocked by junior Michael Rawlins (Huntersville, N.C./Hough), as R-MC led 17-13 with 4:58 remaining.

The Yellow Jackets picked up one first down, but were stopped on the AU 38. Junior Julian Drew (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) placed a punt inside the AU 5, which was downed on the AU2 by junior Eric Hoy (Clayton, N.C./Clayton). The Cougars picked up one first down, but a fourth-down pass was broken up by senior Ryan Burns (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) with 1:22 remaining. McBride took two knees to end the game, giving the visitors a 17-13 win.

Sophomore Shajuan Phillips (Richmond, Va./Thomas Dale) paced the R-MC defense with 10 tackles, while senior Jake Pinkston (Alexandria, Va./Robinson) and sophomore DeAngelo Barr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) each had eight tackles.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16 for a 1 p.m. non-conference at Catholic.
