Six Yellow Jackets Earn VaSID All-State Recognition

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Randolph-Macon football team had three players on first team and three on second team as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced the 2017 College Division All-State football team.

First team members included senior offensive lineman Jay Hausler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee), junior offensive lineman Greg Castle (Clayton, N.C./North Johnston) and junior punter Julian Drew (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield). Yellow Jackets on the second team were senior defensive lineman Jake Pinkston (Alexandria, Va./Robinson), junior running back Tre Frederick (Angier, N.C./West Johnston) and junior linebacker Yonis Blanco (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair).

Hausler was previously named an All-ODAC First Team selection as well as Offensive Lineman of the Year in the state of Virginia by the Touchdown Club of Richmond. Hausler blocked for an offense that was second in the ODAC and 24th in the nation in rushing at 239.7 yards per game during the regular season. R-MC was second in the league and 11th in the country in time of possession at 34:10. The Yellow Jackets were first in the conference and fifth in the nation in third down conversion percentage at .508. R-MC did not have a punt or kick blocked this season.

Castle was All-ODAC First Team. A Preseason All-American, Castle also blocked for an offense that was second in the ODAC and 24th in the nation in rushing at 239.7 yards per game. R-MC was second in the league and 11th in the country in time of possession at 34:10. The Yellow Jackets were first in the conference and fifth in the nation in third down conversion percentage at .508. R-MC did not have a punt or kick blocked this season.

An All-ODAC First Team selection, Drew averaged 40.1 yards per punt on 34 kicks, the top mark in the ODAC. He had 10 punts go inside the opponent's 20-yard line. Cade had four punts of 50 or more yards, with a long of 53. Six of his punts were fair caught and five were touchbacks. Drew was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.

Pinkston, another All-ODAC First Team performer, was Defensive Lineman of the Year in the state of Virginia by the Touchdown Club of Richmond. Pinkston was second on the team with 57 tackles, including 24 solo stops. He had 5.5 tackles for loss, including 2.5 quarterback sacks. He had one pass breakup and forced one fumble. Pinkston had a season-best 17 tackles against Washington and Lee as well as 10 tackles against Dickinson.

An All-ODAC First Team selection, Frederick was All-South Region Second Team by D3football.com. Frederick was second in the ODAC and 10th in the nation in rushing yards per game during the regular season at 145.3. He gained 1,308 yards on the ground in nine games, his second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season. Frederick ran for a season-high 231 yards on 18 carries with four touchdowns in a 52-24 win at Bridgewater. Frederick was second in the conference and 10th in the country in all-purpose yardage at 184.1 yards per game. He had 16 total touchdowns and 13 rushing touchdowns.

Blanco was All-ODAC First Team and had 48 tackles in seven games for the Yellow Jackets. He had 4.5 tackles for loss and forced a fumble. Blanco was first in the ODAC and third in the nation with three fumble recoveries. He had eight tackles in his season debut against Shenandoah and 10 tackles against Washington and Lee.

Under head coach Pedro Arruza, Randolph-Macon posted a 7-3 overall mark in 2017. The Yellow Jackets were 4-2 in ODAC play, good for second place in the conference standings. R-MC concluded the season with a 56-28 victory over rival Hampden-Sydney. The Yellow Jackets have topped the Tigers four straight times and have won six of the past seven meetings.
