  Randolph-Macon Football Facilities

Day Field

The R-MC community was abuzz on September 8, 2012, as Yellow Jackets and friends dedicated the new Day Field.

Director of Athletics Jeff Burns ’87 served as master of ceremonies and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Alan Rashkind ’69 welcomed guests.

“We are so proud of this new facility and we have built a home field that is finally fit for the exceptional student-athletes that will compete on it,” said Burns.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Committee on Athletics E. Jackson “Jack” Luck ’64 said, “Special occasions like these provide all of us with a chance to reflect on our experiences as a student at Randolph-Macon College.”

Luck remembered “the wonderful lessons that football taught me: resilience, toughness, character and teamwork. These same lessons are taught by our current coaches and are the foundation of our athletic program.” He said that new facilities such as Day Field will have a positive impact on students, alumni, and other Yellow Jacket fans.

R-MC President Robert R. Lindgren told the crowd, “The new Day Field sits proudly among our campus structures as a symbol of how much we value our athletic program and how much it adds to the education of the whole student, outside as well as inside the classroom. As with all we do, we have always done athletics well, and now, in so many ways, (including what you see before you today), we are truly ‘building extraordinary’ – taking what we do best to a whole new level.”

Following the dedication, the Yellow Jackets kicked off the season as they took on Averett University on Day Field. The Jackets beat the Cougars 21-6.

Day Field is named for Bible Professor Frank L. Day, who gave the land for these athletic fields in 1937.The new Day Field, which now runs north and south, has a turf playing surface, stadium lights, brick walkways, a press box, visitor stands, and a walking track. It is surrounded on the north side by Andrews Residence Hall and surrounded on the south side by Birdsong Residence Hall. Renovations to Day Field were made possible through the generous support of alumni, parents and Yellow Jacket fans.
