ASHLAND, Va. - The Randolph-Macon athletic community was saddened to learn of the passing of Kathryn Stephens on Oct. 18 at the age of 92.
Mrs. Stephens was the wife of the late Hugh Stephens '41, longtime head baseball coach and director of athletics at R-MC. The Stephens were married for nearly 50 years before Coach Stephens passed away in 1993.
“It’s hard to put into words the impact that she has had on our college and baseball program," said Ray Hedrick '97, R-MC head baseball coach. "Nearly 70 years associated with R-MC and, specifically, R-MC Baseball. I can’t tell you how fortunate I feel to have shared so many great stories and memories with her over the past 13 years. Extremely happy she was able to be front and center for all that the program has achieved since 2005. All of us in the R-MC community will be forever indebted to Kathryn Stephens and her family.”
Even after the passing of Coach Stephens, Mrs. Stephens continued her support of the R-MC baseball program. She attended numerous home games, including this past spring.
In 2011, Mrs. Stephens helped dedicate the new baseball facility on the R-MC campus, Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
Mrs. Stephens also worked for 20 years as director of the R-MC Bookstore.
A memorial service for Mrs. Stephens will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. at Duncan Memorial Church in Ashland, Va.
