Holmes Scores Career-High 21 to Lead No. 5 R-MC past EMU

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) scored a career-high 21 points off the bench as the fifth-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team squeaked past Eastern Mennonite 76-73 in ODAC action Wednesday evening at Crenshaw Gymnasium to extend its win streak to 15.

Holmes hit a career-best nine field goals and matched his career-high with three three-pointers. He also pulled down eight rebounds and blocked four shots.

The game was tied at 67-67 with six minutes remaining before junior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) hit a jumper and freshman Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) nailed a three-pointer on a fast break to give the Yellow Jackets (18-2, 11-0 ODAC) a 72-67 lead with five minutes left. The Royals (13-7, 6-5 ODAC) cut the deficit to three before senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) made a free throw and senior Evan Jackson (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) sank a jumper to give R-MC a 75-69 advantage with 3:40 remaining. Hassell hit another free throw in between jumpers by James Williams of EMU to make it a 76-73 contest with 1:40 left. Jerome Jones missed a three-pointer for the Royals with one minute remaining. Williams and David Falk both missed treys in the final five seconds as the Yellow Jackets held on for the victory.

The teams stayed within four points of each other in the first six minutes of the contest. R-MC held a 20-16 lead before using a 13-4 spurt to take a 33-20 advantage with nine minutes remaining.EMU put together a 16-7 run to pull within four at 40-36 with 2:30 left in the period. Holmes hit a trey with 45 seconds left and the Yellow Jackets took a 47-40 lead at intermission. Holmes had 12 first-half points and Hassell put in 10.

EMU used a 7-2 spurt to pull within two at 49-47 with 14:45 remaining. R-MC scored nine straight to lead 58-47 with 12:20 left. An 11-2 run by the Royals made it a two-point game at 60-58 midway through the second half.  EMU eventually knotted the score at 67-67.

Hassell finished with 14 points and Moore added 10 with six rebounds. Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) had six assists for the Yellow Jackets.

Marcel Crump led the Royals with 18 points, while Falk posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 7 with a 2 p.m. ODAC contest at Washington and Lee.
