FOREST, Va. - The Randolph-Macon men's basketball team was voted second in the 2017-18 ODAC Preseason Poll, in voting by the league's head coaches and released by the conference office.
The Yellow Jackets received a pair of first-place votes and 104 points to trail only defending champion Guilford, which collected eight first-place votes and 117 points. Virginia Wesleyan picked up one first-place vote and 95 points to take third, two points ahead of Emory & Henry, which had the final first-place vote. Roanoke came in fifth, followed by Lynchburg, Washington and Lee, Hampden-Sydney, Eastern Mennonite, Randolph, Bridgewater and Shenandoah.
Under head coach Josh Merkel, R-MC finished 17-9 overall a season ago. The Yellow Jackets went 13-3 in ODAC play and tied with Guilford for the regular-season title.
R-MC returns four of its top five scorers and its top two rebounders. Senior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) was All-ODAC Second Team a season ago. He was second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 10.0 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per contest. Junior Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) averaged 8.6 points in 18 minutes per game. He shot 52% from the floor and 46% on three-pointers. Sophomore Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) averaged 7.0 points off the bench and led the Yellow Jackets with 63 assists. Junior Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) also averaged 7.0 points per outing and topped the team with 5.3 rebounds per game. Junior Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) averaged 4.5 points per game and shot 52% on field goals and 42% on three-pointers. Junior Jon Nowell (Riverdale, Ga./Blair Academy) averaged 3.4 points and 2.6 rebounds while leading the team with 23 blocks.
Randolph-Macon plays an exhibition game at Maryland on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. The Yellow Jackets open the regular season at home on Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. against nationally-ranked Christopher Newport in Crenshaw Gym.
