BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Two Randolph-Macon Men's Soccer Yellow Jackets were honored by the state's sports information directors Wednesday, as senior forward Bryan Lutz (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) and junior goalie Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) were named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Second Team. It's the first time either have been recognized by VaSID.
Breslin had the second-best goals against average in the ODAC, only allowing 0.75 goals against. He allowed just 14 goals in 18 games and nearly 1,700 minutes. Breslin also tallied ten clean sheets, which was in the Top 15 in the country for total shutouts and Top 10 in shutouts compared to matches played. He led the conference for total shutouts.
Lutz completes the 2017 season as the top goal-scorer on the team with eight goals. He added three assists to total 19 points. Lutz finished with the third-most goals in the conference as well as the fourth-most points. Lutz was also named to the United Soccer Coaches All-South Atlantic Region Third Team, the All-ODAC First Team and is a Scholar All-American. He will leave R-MC with 19 goals and 45 points.
Ten different Virginia programs were represented on this year's men's soccer All-State teams, chosen from programs at the Division II, III and NAIA level. Christopher Newport had the most first-team selections with four while Lynchburg had the most total picks with six – three on first team and three on second team. CNU also had the State Player of the Year, while Lynchburg had the State Coach of the Year. Mary Washington had the State Rookie of the Year.
VaSID names 27 all-state teams in 15 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a University or conference in the state of Virginia.
