FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Four Randolph-Macon men's tennis student-athletes competed in the 2017 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championship over the weekend at the University of Mary Washington. The Yellow Jackets were able to collect two wins while competing at the tournament.
Junior Jacob Haines (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) competed first on Friday in the singles round in the Championship Round of 128. Haines was not able to overcome his opponent from St. Mary's and lost in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 4-6.
Junior Shane Berry (Midlothian, Va./James River) kicked off competition on Saturday. He was not able to defeat his opponent from McDaniel, losing in the first round of the B3 Singles competition 3-6, 5-7. Berry did bounce back in the consolation round on Sunday though. He was able to beat his opponent from Shenandoah University 6-2, 6-1 and went on to take the default victory over his opponent from Moravian College. Berry was slated to play in the B3 Singles Consolation Round Finals against an opponent from Catholic, but the match was unable to be played in the remainder of the weekend.
In doubles action, senior Baxter Carter (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) and freshman Erik Moulten lost their match in the first round of championship doubles play against their opponents from Johns Hopkins.
The men's and women's tennis programs will next host a fundraiser for the public and friends of the tennis program. The matches are set for Saturday, October 7, beginning at 9:30 AM.
