ASHLAND, Va. – The #17 R-MC softball team split a double-header with Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon. R-MC won game one by a score of 3-0, then dropped game two 9-6.
In game one sophomore pitcher Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./ Patrick Henry) earned her sixth win of the year with 10 strikeouts in the 3-0 shutout of Gettysburg.
In the bottom of the first inning, sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahanock, Va./ Essex) hit a single and then stole second base. Freshman Sam Scifres (Midlothian, Va./ Clover Hill) then batted Wood in with a single to right center to open the score at 1-0.
Wood then earned her second hit of the day and batted in senior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./ Powhatan) to give R-MC a 2-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets held the Bullets scoreless for all seven innings. Whittemore threw 10 strikeouts and walked just four batters in seven innings.
Game two was a high scoring affair as R-MC lost its first game of the season 9-6. The Bullets had a three run top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first, freshman Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va./ Glen Allen) stole third off of an error to put R-MC on the board.
In the fourth inning the Bullets scored four runs to increase their lead to 7-1, R-MC then scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Sophomore Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./ Liberty) led the Yellow Jackets with three hits a RBI and a scored run.
Junior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./ Brunswick) had two hits in the game and one run scored.
R-MC will be back in action on Wednesday, March 15 with a home double-header against Methodist starting at 2:30 p.m.
