Whittemore Wins Twice as #13 R-MC Softball Sweeps EMU

ASHLAND, Va. - Sophomore Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) earned two victories for the 13th-ranked Randolph-Macon softball team in an ODAC doubleheader sweep of Eastern Mennonite Wednesday afternoon at the R-MC Softball Field.

The Yellow Jackets (15-1, 2-0 ODAC) took the opener 8-0 in five innings and claimed the nightcap 6-3 over the Royals (12-2, 0-2 ODAC).

Whittemore (9-0) allowed two hits in five innings in Game 1 with no walks and three strikeouts. She now has eight complete games and three shutouts. Whittemore came in in relief in Game 2, going 3.2 innings with one hit and three strikeouts.

In Game 1, R-MC started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Freshman Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) drew a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on a passed ball to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 advantage Junior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick) picked up a one-out walk and junior Skylar Toth (Midlothian Va./Clover Hill) belted a homer to center to give the home team a 3-0 edge. Senior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) singled and scored on a triple by junior Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock), giving R-MC a 4-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the second. Sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) had a one-out single, stole second, moved to third on a base hit Jones and scored on a groundout by sophomore Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./Liberty) to up the lead to 5-0. Jones would later come home on a passed ball to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-0 lead.

R-MC plated another run in the fourth as Wood had a leadoff double and scored on a base hit by Jones to make it a 7-0 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets ended the game in the fifth. Sophomore Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va./Prince George) had a one-out single, stole second and scored on an error to make the final 8-0.

Wood and Jones both finished with two hits and two runs for the Yellow Jackets.

In the nightcap, after EMU plated a pair in the top of the first, R-MC cut into the lead in the second. Thompson had a one-out single and pinch-runner Cori Spartana (Baltimore, Md./St. Timothy's) stole second. Mulvena had a base hit to drive in Spartana and make it a 2-1 game.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the third. Freshman Kayley Reese (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) drew a leadoff, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Roth to level the score at 2-2. Wood had a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a single by Jones to give R-MC a 3-2 lead.

After the Royals tied it with a run in the top of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the frame. Mulvena had a one-out double, moved to third on a single by Balcom and scored on a passed ball to make it 4-3. Pinch-runner Sarah Cimring (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) scored on a fielder's choice to give R-MC a 5-3 advantage.

R-MC added a run in the fifth as Wood singled and scored on a base hit by Whittemore to make it a 6-3 contest.

Mulvena had two hits, a run and an RBI, while Wood scored twice for the Yellow Jackets.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Sunday, March 26 with a 1 p.m. ODAC home doubleheader against Randolph.
