ASHLAND, Va. – The #13 R-MC softball team split an ODAC double-header with Randolph College on Sunday afternoon. In game one, the Yellow Jackets won 8-2, followed by a 5-1 loss in the second game.
R-MC are now 16-2 and 3-1 in the ODAC, while the WildCats are 15-7 and 2-2 in conference play.
Sophomore Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./ Patrick Henry) earned her 10th win of the season in game one and remains undefeated in 2017. She threw seven strikeouts and only allowed three hits in the win.
The Yellow Jackets took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as junior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./ Brunswick) sent sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./ Essex) to home plate. Jones would then score from junior Skylar Toth's (Midlothian, Va./ Clover Hill) single.
In the bottom of the third inning, junior Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./ Rappahannock) hit a two run home run to increase the lead to 4-0. R-MC would score four runs on four hits in the third. The Yellow Jackets added a run in the fourth and sixth innings to earn their 16th win of the season.
The Yellow Jackets dropped game two by a score of 5-1. Randolph took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the third inning the Yellow Jackets were able to pull one run back after freshman Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./ St. Margaret's) hit a triple and was then sent home from freshman Sami Davidson's (Stafford, Va./ Brooke Point) sacrifice fly.
Roth had two hits in the game, both were triples.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday, March 28th for an ODAC road double-header against Bridgewater. The first game will start at 3 p.m.
