LYNCHBURG, Va. – The #16 R-MC softball team split an ODAC double-header with Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon. In game one, R-MC used a six run sixth inning to come from behind and win 9-4. R-MC then fell 4-2 in game two.
The Yellow Jackets are now 21-7 this season with a 6-6 ODAC record.
Sophomore Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./ Grafton) had an outstanding day, recording four hits, four rbi and three runs between the two games.
The Yellow Jackets took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one after junior Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./ Rappahannock) hit a double to open the scoring in the game. She finished with two hits and three rbi in game one.
Lynchburg then took the lead after scoring three runs in the fourth and added one in the fourth. Then, in the top of the sixth inning, R-MC scored six runs off of three hits.
Roth (Yorktown, Va./ Grafton) had the play of the inning, earning three rbi off of a double she hit into right center.
Pitching for the Yellow Jackets was sophomore Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./ Patrick Henry), who earned her 14th victory of the season in the win.
Game two saw the Yellow Jackets fall behind 3-0 in the first inning. R-MC and Lynchburg remained scoreless till the bottom of the sixth, where the Hornets added one run.
The Yellow Jackets then tried to rally in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va./ Prince George) hit a single then stole second base. She then advanced to third on a throw before Roth hit a single to send Abernethy home, earning her fourth rbi of the day. Sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./ Essex) then hit a single to send Roth to home plate.
R-MC will be back in action tomorrow with a home double-header against Methodist with game starting at 1:30 p.m.
