FERRUM, Va. -- Senior Sarah Parsons (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) scored 21 points and junior Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) registered a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team topped Ferrum 69-65 Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both clubs.
R-MC opened up a six-point lead of 8-2 with 17:56 in the first half. The Panthers (0-1) cut the lead to one with 16:18 left in the period but the Yellow Jackets would maintain the lead by as many as nine points through the rest of the half and headed into halftime with a six-point advantage, 30-24.
Ferrum scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 31-30 lead. Sophomore Marisha Berry (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) hit a jumper with 12:24 left to give the Yellow Jackets a 44-37 advantage. The Panthers scored six in a row to pull within one at 44-43 with 11:30 left. Livermon nailed a three with 9:14 to go to stop the rally and give R-MC a 47-43 edge. Ferrum hit a trey with just over three minutes left as the home team pulled within two at 58-56.
Parsons hit consecutive jumpers to extend R-MC's lead to 62-56 with two minutes left. The Panthers again closed to within two before a layup by Hester with 45 seconds left gave the Yellow Jackets a 66-62 lead. Ferrum hit a three-pointer to make it a one-point contest before Hester hit two free throws with 28 seconds left to push the lead to 68-65. After a turnover, Hester hit another foul shot with eight seconds left to make the final 69-65.
Randolph-Macon returns to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. at Marymount.
