ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) recorded her third double-double in as many games with 24 points and 13 rebounds as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team dropped a 91-80 decision to Marymount Tuesday evening in Crenshaw Gym.
The Yellow Jackets (2-1) trailed 63-61 after three quarters and were down one at 69-68 2:30 into the final period before the Saints (2-0) hit a pair of threes and a layup to take a 77-68 advantage with 5:30 remaining. Freshman Kelsey Wisner (York, Pa./Central York) nailed a three-pointer to make it a six-point game before six straight by MU gave the visitors an 83-71 edge with 3:45 left, completing a 14-3 run. The lead would stay in double figures the rest of the way for the Saints.
MU built a quick 7-3 lead before a 7-3 run by R-MC knotted the score at 10. The Saints would regain the advantage and hold an 18-14 edge at the end of the first quarter. Freshman Jayla Wade (Newport News, Va./Heritage) made a layup to cap an 8-2 run as the Yellow Jackets took a 22-20 lead. MU tallied 10 straight points to assume a 30-22 advantage. R-MC scored nine straight to take a 31-30 lead with four minutes left in the first half. The Saints would take a 41-39 lead at intermission. Wisner had 11 points in the first half, while Anderson put up eight points and grabbed eight boards.
The Saints led through the first five minutes in the third quarter before a jumper by freshman Leara Shumate (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) tied it at 51 with 4:30 left in the period. MU hit a pair of threes to push the lead back to six before enjoying the 63-61 lead heading to the final quarter.
Anderson went 10 for 13 from the floor and sank four free throws for her 24 points. Wisner finished with 16 points, going 5 for 7 from the floor, 3 for 4 on three-pointers and 3 for 3 from the foul like. Senior Hannah Livermon (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) tallied 13 points, hitting five field goals and three treys.
Junior Taylor Intermill (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) paced the Yellow Jackets with seven assists.
Kievanna Lacey had 28 points to lead the Saints.
Randolph-Macon will play in the Swarthmore Tip-Off Classic this weekend, facing Wesleyan on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Neumann on Sunday at 1 p.m.
