Lightfoot Leads R-MC Women's Lacrosse over BC 9-5

ASHLAND, Va. - Junior Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) had two goals and dished out three assists, and the Yellow Jackets won all but one draw control, as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team beat Bridgewater 9-5 in ODAC action Thursday evening at Day Field.

The Yellow Jackets evened their record at 4-4 overall and moved to 1-0 in the ODAC. The Eagles dropped to 4-1 overall, 0-1 in conference play.

R-MC scored on its first possession, as senior Susie Snee (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) netted a goal on an assist by senior Laney Dee (Norfolk, Va./Bishop Sullivan)  to give the Yellow Jackets the early lead. BC tallied the next two goals before Dee scored on an assist by junior Lightfoot to level the score at 2-2 with just under 18 minutes remaining in the first half. Senior Jessie Cornbrooks (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan) netted the tie-breaker on an assist by Lightfoot with just over two minutes left to give R-MC a 3-2 edge at the break.

The Yellow Jackets would register six of the first seven goals in the second half. Dee scored less than a minute into the second stanza on a pass from Cornbrooks as the Yellow Jackets took a 4-2 lead. After the Eagles pulled within one, Lightfoot recorded a goal on an assist by sophomore Saunders Riley (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) to make it 5-3 with 18:14 remaining. It would be the first of five straight goals for R-MC. Sophomore Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) got a goal on a pass from Riley to make it 6-3 with 17:53 left. Junior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored midway through the second period on an assist by Lightfoot to up the lead to 7-3. Lightfoot logged her second goal of the game three minutes later on a pass from Jones to raise the advantage to 8-3. Jones had the final goal for the Yellow Jackets on a pass from freshman Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) to make it 9-3 with just over six minutes remaining. BC would record the last two goals to make the final 9-5.

Dee and Jones both had two goals and an assist for the victors.

R-MC held a 15-1 advantage in draw controls. Snee led the way with six, while Jones recorded four. Snee also topped the team with five ground balls, while Dee and junior Sarah Alvanos (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) both had four. Hsieh paced R-MC with four caused turnovers.

Senior Allie Walker (Towson, Md./Mercy) recorded eight saves for the Yellow Jackets.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, March 29 with a 7 p.m. ODAC contest at Virginia Wesleyan.
