ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Gabby Nelson (Clover, Va./Halifax County) scored the lone goal of Saturday afternoon's match with Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Roanoke, sending a shot off the top crossbar and into the back of the net and securing Randolph-Macon's victory, 1-0.
It was one of four shots on goal for the Yellow Jackets during the game. Junior Mary Virginia Kelley (Midlothian, Va. / James River), sophomore Haley Silva (Henrico, Va. / Deep Run) and freshman Meghan Skevington (Richmond, Va. / Deep Run) had the other three. Skevington led all players with eight shot attempts.
The halftime break was huge for Randolph-Macon as the team came out hungry for the goal that would eventually come. R-MC took four shots in the span of three minutes between the 53rd and 56th minute, with Skevington launching three in that time and junior Jenna Burns (Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) trying once. It would take another ten minutes to finally land the game winner off the foot of Nelson, but R-MC kept the pressure on Roanoke, preventing much play on the Yellow Jacket side of the field.
The single goal was all that was needed though, as the Yellow Jacket defense turned up the heat on Roanoke. R-MC did not allow a single corner kick to the Maroons. After halftime, the Yellow Jackets allowed just four shots, with only one being on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Christina Newman (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) saved all three shots taken against her for the entire game.
The Yellow Jackets now go on the road for the next week, first to Methodist (N.C.) on Wednesday at 5:00 P.M. and then at Washington and Lee on Saturday, September 23 at 3:00 P.M. They will return home against Randolph on Wednesday, September 27 at 4:00 P.M.
