Seniors Key in Senior Day Victory Over Hollins 10-1

Kasey Martino shoots the ball

ASHLAND, Va. – Each of Randolph-Macon's four seniors scored during their Senior Day match on Saturday as the Yellow Jackets took down Hollins 10-1 to move to 9-4-1 on the season and 5-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

It started early for the fourth years. Courtney Taylor (Prince George, Va. / Prince George) got a cross from fellow senior Kasey Martino (Centreville, Va. / Centreville) in the third minute and Taylor turned it in for her third goal of the season. Martino tallied her third assist.

Barely a minute later, Martino got her turn and again the senior connection was strong. Senior Brooke Weiss (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) scuffed a shot to Martino for her to put into the net for her third goal of the season. Weiss marked her first assist.

In the ninth minute, freshman Meghan Skevington (Richmond, Va. / Deep Run) scored her fifth goal of the season as she took a shot from the edge of the box that slipped past the keeper's hands and into goal.

Skevington did it again around three minutes later as she took a pass from junior Mary Virginia Kelley (Midlothian, Va. / James River) to put it into the net.

Junior Olivia Maust (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) got the next goal for the Yellow Jackets. Maust slotted the ball into the corner to beat the keeper and move R-MC's lead to 5-0. It was Maust's first goal of the season.

The offense continued with Weiss sticking the ball into the far corner on the other side from the keeper. She took the pass from freshman Taylor Drucker (Glen Allen / Deep Run) to accomplish the task. It was Weiss's third goal of the season while Drucker got her second assist.

Senior Sofie Rodriguez (Arlington, Va. / Washington-Lee) made the most of her Senior Day as well. She got an unassisted goal past the keeper in the 38th minute to push R-MC's lead to 7-0.

Hollins got one back right before the half to make the score at the break 7-1.

For much of the second half, the score remained what it was at the half. But in the 81st minute, R-MC found the net again. Junior Jenna Burns (Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) scored on a shot in front of the goal after she had gotten a shot cross from Gabby Nelson (Clover, Va. / Halifax County). Burns marked her fourth goal of the season with the score while Nelson tallied her second assist.

Freshman Meredith Higginbotham (Richmond / Godwin) scored next goal for R-MC, just two minutes later as she took a corner kick from freshman Casey Kent (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax) and put it in the net. It was Higginbotham's first goal and Kent's sixth assist.

Similarly, a Kent corner kick led to the final goal for Randolph-Macon – along with a little bit of wizardry. In the 86th minute, Sophomore Keavy Baylor (Smithfield, Va. / Hampton Roads Academy) took a shot from inside the box that bounced straight off the top bar. But it suddenly spun back into the back corner of the net to lead to R-MC's last goal of the afternoon. Baylor marked her second goal while Kent pushed her assists to seven on the season.

R-MC heads to Shenandoah next to play a 7:00 PM match on Wednesday before returning to R-MC for Homecoming on Saturday against Lynchburg.
