ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Molly Jesseman (Williamsburg, Va./ Warhill) sent the Randolph-Macon women's tennis team into the ODAC Championship final with a 5-1 win over Randolph. The Yellow Jackets will face Washington and Lee tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Banks Tennis Center.
The Yellow Jackets and WildCats played a two and half hour match after an hour rain delay.
R-MC took a 2-1 lead after doubles. The Yellow Jackets then won at #2, #4 and #6 singles to win the match and advance.
Sophomore Stephanie Yeager (Fairfax, Va./ Robinson Secondary) and freshman Landon Aud (Fishersville, Va./ Wilson Memorial) were first off with an 8-2 win over Kristen Hamilton and Samantha Dickerson at #3.
At number two doubles, seniors Melissa Tomlin (Prince George, Va./ Prince George) and Molly Jesseman came from behind to win and give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 advantage heading into singles. The duo beat Jenna Sweet and Ashley Schmitz 9-7.
In singles, first off for the Yellow Jackets was sophomore Gaby Tersigni (Yorktown, Va./ York). She won her match at #2 singles 6-2, 6-4. Tersigni is now 17-2 this season at number two singles.
Next off for R-MC was senior Toni McDonald (Richmond, Va./ Varina), who won 6-1, 6-3 at number six.
Clinching the match was Jesseman, who won her second match of the day and beat Lauren Appel 6-0, 6-3.
In each of the three unfinished matches, R-MC were leading in all of them. Senior Caitlin Delmas (Asheville, N.C./ K-12 International Academy) won the first set at #1 6-2. At number three singles, Tomlin was up 6-1, 1-1. Finally, at number four singles, freshman Kristin Dantzler (Williamsburg, Va./ York) won her first set 7-6, winning the tiebreaker 7-2.
R-MC will go to its second consecutive ODAC Championship game on Sunday. Washington and Lee entered the tournament as the #1 seed and currently have a national ranking of #13.
