Randolph-Macon Baseball Wins 2013 ODAC Championship

SALEM, VA – Randolph-Macon Baseball knocked off top seeded Bridgewater College 6-2 to capture the 2013 ODAC Baseball Championship Monday night. Michael Trentham was named Most Outstanding Player as the Yellow Jackets placed five on the All-Tournament Team.

R-MC's victory runs their record to 22-16-1 as they secure their fifth Old Dominion Athletic Conference Title in school history, second in the past three seasons. The Championship locks up the ODAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as the Yellow Jackets knocked off the Eagles who finished conference play 19-1 and were unbeaten in the ODAC Tournament heading into the final day.

Jake Fletcher, Jeb Weymouth, Michael Trentham, Michael Helbig and Matt Fischgrund took All-Tournament Team honors after impressive performances during Randolph-Macon's six tournament games.

Mitchell Keeler led off the top of the first with a single through the right side and then stole second to move into scoring position. Jeb Weymouth followed two batters later and singled to center, scoring Keeler.

After back to back singles from Michael Kroll and Mark Heideman in the second, Keeler ripped a double to center that scored both Yellow Jackets and pushed the advantage to 3-0.

This would be more than enough offense for R-MC starter Austin Bain who allowed just one earned run in six innings of work with a strikeout for his first collegiate win.

Kroll reached on a Bridgewater error with two outs in the fourth and then scored when Heideman doubled to left center to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Randolph-Macon kept up the offensive pressure in the sixth after Travis Lodge led off with a single and then scored on a Nate Meiners' double. Heideman followed two batters later with his third hit of the game to score Lodge.

The Eagles cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI infield single off the bat of Derrik Walling. Bain then retired the next batter to end the BC threat.

Senior Michael Helbig came on to pitch in relief for the Yellow Jackets. On Friday, Helbig went the distance against Washington and Lee to improve his career ODAC Tournament record to 4-0. The senior righty gave up just one earned run and fanned one to keep R-MC in front 6-2 heading into the ninth.

Will Jennings was called upon for the second time on the night and third time in the tournament to close out the ninth inning. Jennings allowed a leadoff single and then retired the next three Bridgewater batters to the secure the 2013 ODAC Championship for Randolph-Macon.

Heideman broke out for a 3-for-4 performance with a double and two RBI. Keeler went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI while Meiners finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Weymouth, Lodge and Kroll chipped in with a hit each.

Randolph-Macon will await the announcement of their opponent and regional site for the 2013 NCAA Tournament in the coming weeks.

The Yellow Jackets wrap up their 2013 regular season with games at home on Saturday, May 4th against York (Pa.) and Wesley on Sunday, May 5th. Both games are slated for a 1:00 first pitch at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
