Migliorini Named VaSID State Player of the Year

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Randolph-Macon junior outfielder Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) was voted state Player of the Year as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State Baseball Teams were announced.

Joining Migliorini on the VaSID All-State First Team were junior outfielder/pitcher Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) and sophomore second baseman Jeff Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch).

Migliorini earned All-America Second Team honors by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings and by He was All-South Region First Team by the ABCA/Rawlings and Migliorini was the ODAC Player of the Year and All-ODAC First Team. He led the ODAC with a slugging percentage of .712 and was second in the conference with nine home runs and with an on-base percentage of .484. Migliorini was third in the league with a batting average of .399, fourth with 45 RBI and fifth with 47 runs. He was also in the Top Ten in the ODAC with 61 hits, 13 doubles, four triples and 26 walks. Migliorini led the Yellow Jackets with 21 multi-hit games and was second with 13 multi-RBI games. He had a 14-game hit streak during the season and had a streak of 31 consecutive games reaching base safely.

Spiers was All-South Region Third Team by Spiers was All-ODAC Second Team and was named to the ODAC All-Tournament Team. He was second in the conference with 19 stolen bases, third with 48 RBI and fourth with five home runs. Spiers batted .344 with 39 runs, 56 hits, nine doubles, an on-base percentage of .388 and slugging percentage of .503. He finished the season with a 17-game hit streak and led the Yellow Jackets with 14 multi-RBI games. On the mound, Spiers went 2-2 with an ERA of 3.11 and was third in the ODAC with six saves. He made 15 appearances, all but one out of the bullpen. In 37.2 innings, he allowed 41 hits with nine walks and 35 strikeouts. In his lone start of the season, Spiers faced top-seeded and nationally-ranked Shenandoah in an elimination game in the ODAC Tournament. Spiers worked 7.0 innings, his longest outing of the season. He allowed nine hits and one run with no walks and two strikeouts as R-MC stayed alive with a 7-5 victory.

Butler was All-South Region Second Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings. He was also All-ODAC Third Team. Butler started 40 games for the Yellow Jackets. He was seventh in the ODAC with a batting average of .371 and third in the conference with 18 stolen bases. He had an on-base percentage of .447 and slugging percentage of .523. Butler had 11 doubles, four home runs, 43 runs and 32 RBI.

Under head coach Ray Hedrick, Randolph-Macon posted an overall record of 26-15 and went 13-7 in conference play. The Yellow Jackets were the No. 3 seed in the ODAC Tournament. R-MC was in the national polls for the majority of the season, ranked as high as No. 6.
