Roth Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles

ASHLAND, Va. - Senior right-hander Nick Roth (Henrico, Va./Benedictine) was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2019 Major League Baseball draft.

The Orioles made Roth the first player selected in the 26th round, pick #768 overall.

Roth was named All-America First Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings and All-America Second Team by D3baseball.com. He was also the Pitcher of the Year in the South Region by the ABCA/Rawlings and D3baseball.com. Roth was voted ODAC Pitcher of the Year.

In the ODAC, Roth led all pitchers with 10 wins, 4 complete games, 98 strikeouts and 1.93 ERA. He tops the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 14.0, with 98 strikeouts compared to 7 walks. Roth did not allow a walk in his final four starts and his final 34.1 innings. He is fifth in the nation with 0.75 walks per nine innings (7 walks in 84 innings). Roth is ninth nationally with 10 wins, 13th with 98 strikeouts, 18th with a WHIP of 0.92, and 43rd with an ERA of 1.93. Roth has a career mark of 26-2 and owns the program record for career wins. Roth had 221 career strikeouts, six behind the school record of 227 by Yellow Jacket assistant coach James Walsh.

Under 15th-year head coach Ray Hedrick, the Yellow Jackets won the ODAC regular season title for the second straight year. R-MC finished 28-10-1 overall and 16-5-1 in ODAC play. R-MC has been ranked all season, climbing as high as No. 4. The Class of 2019 had 127 victories over the past four seasons, a program record.

This is the second straight year that R-MC has had a pitcher taken in the MLB Draft. Right-hander Colin Selby was selected in the 16th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2018 MLB Draft, the 474th player picked.

The Yellow Jackets have had three players drafted in the past 15 years. Pitcher Travis Beazley was selected in the 38th round by the Boston Red Sox in 2006.

R-MC has had five total players drafted in program history. Pitcher Mike Yearwood went in the 41st round to the Cleveland Indians in 1969. Infielder Jim Bachtell was taken in the 25th round by the Minnesota Twins in 1971.

Over the past 15 seasons, the Yellow Jackets have had four players receive contracts from Major League teams. Along with Roth, Selby and Beazley, Jordan Walton signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012.

R-MC has had eight players sign professional contracts over the past 15 years. James Bierlein, Ryan Wood, James Walsh and Cody Thompson all signed independent league contracts.

Roth, Selby and Thompson will all pitch professionally this summer.
