Roth Named State Pitcher of the Year, Four Earn All-State Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Randolph-Macon senior right-hander Nick Roth (Henrico, Va./Benedictine) was named Pitcher of the Year in the state of Virginia as the 2019 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State team was announced.

Joining Roth on the All-State First Team was junior right-hander Michael Zubovich (Chantilly, Va./Freedom). Junior third baseman Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and junior outfielder Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) were voted to the All-State Second Team.

Roth was a member of the All-America First Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings. Roth was named All-America Second Team by D3baseball.com. He was the Pitcher of the Year in the South Region by the ABCA/Rawlings and D3baseball.com. Roth was voted ODAC Pitcher of the Year.

In the ODAC, Roth led all pitchers with 10 wins, 4 complete games, 98 strikeouts and 1.93 ERA. He tops the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 14.0, with 98 strikeouts compared to 7 walks. Roth did not allowed a walk in his final four starts and his final 34.1 innings. He is fifth in the nation with 0.75 walks per nine innings (7 walks in 84 innings). Roth is ninth nationally with 10 wins, 13th with 98 strikeouts, 18th with a WHIP of 0.92, and 43rd with an ERA of 1.93. Roth has a career mark of 26-2 and owns the program record for career wins. Roth had 221 career strikeouts, six behind the school record of 227 by R-MC assistant coach James Walsh.

Zubovich was All-South Region Second Team by the ABCA/Rawlings and D3baseball.com. Zubovich went 8-0 this season and was third in the ODAC as well as 32nd in the nation with those 8 victories. He was fourth in the conference with 9.47 strikeouts per nine innings. Zubovich was also fourth in the ODAC with 74 strikeouts and 35th in the country with a strikeout-to-walk ration of 5.69. Three times this season he had nine strikeouts in a game.

Mike Nickles was also All-South Region Second Team by the ABCA/Rawlings and D3baseball.com. The ODAC Player of the Year, Mike Nickles batted .358 in 38 games with 45 runs, 54 hits, 12 doubles, 5 triples, 7 home runs and 43 RBI. He was second in the ODAC with 45 runs. His slugging percentage was .642, the second-highest mark in the ODAC, and his on-base percentage was .461. Mike Nickles had 14 multi-hit games, including four hits at Virginia Wesleyan. He drove in five against Emory & Henry and Stevens.

Shawn Nickles, an All-ODAC First Team selection, was second in the ODAC with 45 RBI. He batted .299 with an on-base percentage of .408 and slugging percentage of .542. Shawn Nickles had 36 runs, 43 hits, 5 doubles, 3 triples and a team-leading 8 home runs. One of those dingers was a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th in an 8-7 home win over NC Wesleyan. Shawn Nickles went 4 for 4 with a double, a triple, three runs, three RBI and three steals in the opener of the doubleheader at Bridgewater. He wet 12 for 14 on stolen base attempts.

Under 15th-year head coach Ray Hedrick, the Yellow Jackets won the ODAC regular season title for the second straight year. R-MC finished 28-10-1 overall and 16-5-1 in ODAC play. R-MC was been ranked all season, climbing as high as No. 4. The Class of 2019 had 127 victories over the past four seasons, a program record.
