WASHINGTON, D.C. – After falling behind early, Randolph-Macon outscored Catholic 34-3 in posting a 34-10 football victory Friday evening in ODAC action at Cardinal Stadium in a heavy rainstorm.
The Cardinals (3-2, 0-2 ODAC) scored on their first possession, driving 65 yards in nine plays in just over three minutes, using a hurry-up offense to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets (4-1, 2-0) finally took advantage of good field position on their third offensive possession as junior quarterback Zac Naccarato hit freshman tight end Steven Quinn with a six-yard TD pass to knot the score at 7-7 late in the first period.
Sophomore running back John Byrd busted through for a one-yard score early in the second quarter as R-MC took its first lead at 14-7. Freshman linebacker Marcus Mitchell recovered a fumbled punt to push the lead to 21-7. Catholic added a 35-yard field goal later in the half as the Jackets took a 21-10 lead at intermission.
Byrd scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter and junior running back Jesse Knepp added a touchdown late in the fourth quarter as the Jackets posted a 34-10 victory, their fourth straight win.
Senior running back Will McGhee finished with 152 yards on 33 carries for R-MC.
Junior defensive end Tom Solak led the Jackets with 11 tackles, one sack, 1.5 tackles for loss, 1 interception and two pass breakups.
R-MC returns home to Day Field next Saturday, Oct. 19, for a 1 p.m. Homecoming ODAC contest against Washington & Lee.
