Naccarato Scores in Final 30 Seconds to Lead R-MC past Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Junior quarterback Zac Naccarato scored on a two-yard run with 29.9 seconds left and freshman Seth Yurgel kicked the extra point as Randolph-Macon edged Bridgewater 35-34 in ODAC football action at Jopson Field.


With the victory, the Yellow Jackets (7-2, 5-1 ODAC) stay in the hunt for the conference championship. R-MC will host Hampden-Sydney (7-2, 5-1) on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. at Day Field.


There were 36 points scored in the fourth quarter after 33 were put up in the first three periods. The Eagles (4-5, 1-5 ODAC) led 19-14 late in the third period. The Yellow Jackets faced fourth-and-six on their own 42. Punter Tracy Murden lined up to kick and threw a 17-yard pass to Matt Williamson for a first down. Naccarato scored on a seven-yard run and Greg Petrohovich hit Williamson on a two-point conversion to give the visitors a 22-19 lead with 11:02 remaining.


BC hit a 16-yard TD pass with 6:27 left. The PAT kick gave the home team a 26-22 edge.


Facing fourth and 11 from the R-MC 49, Naccarato hit Petrohovich down the right sideline for a 51-yard touchdown with 3:38 to go. The kick was blocked as the Yellow Jackets took a 28-26 lead.


The Eagles would not die, hitting a 50-yard TD pass with 1:50 left. The successful two-point conversion put Bridgewater up 34-28.


The kickoff went out of bounds, giving the Yellow Jackets the ball on their 25. Naccarato hit John Byrd with a four-yard completion and connected with Mike Doe on a 26-yard pass to give R-MC the ball on the BC 45. Will McGhee had runs of 19, 14 and five yards to give the Jackets second and five at the seven with 38 seconds left. A pass interference penalty against BC in the end zone gave the Yellow Jackets a first down on the two. Naccarato scored on the next play to knot the score at 24. Yurgel's kick was successful, putting R-MC up 35-34.


Bridgewater was able to move the ball to the R-MC 32 with 2.1 seconds remaining. Chandler DeHaven's 49-yard field goal attempt had the distance, but was wide right to give the Yellow Jackets the victory.


The Eagles got a touchdown in the first quarter and a field goal early in the second period to take a 10-0 advantage. The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter as Naccarato converted a fourth-and-goal from the one to make it 10-7. The sneak capped a nine-play drive that covered 75 yards in 3:52.


Bridgewater added a field goal with 45 seconds left in the half to take a 13-7 lead at intermission.


The Yellow Jackets took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 58 yards in nine plays as McGhee scored on a four-yard run to give R-MC its first lead at 14-13.


Late in the third period, Bridgewater reached the end zone and failed on the two-point conversion. The Eagles led 19-14 heading to the fourth quarter.


Naccarato had nine rushes for 18 yards and three touchdowns. He completed nine of 13 passes for 156 yards and one score.


McGhee carried the ball 29 times for 157 yards and one TD.


Deshaun Rogers led the Yellow Jackets with 10 tackles. Tom Solak had seven tackles, two tackles for loss and one quarterback sack.
