Frederick Helps R-MC Football Down Averett

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore running back Tre Frederick (Angier, N.C./West Johnston) recorded 283 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Randolph-Macon football team past Averett 44-10 Saturday evening in front of 3,113 fans at Day Field.

The Yellow Jackets (2-0) have outscored their opponents 95-10 in the season's first two games.

The reigning ODAC Offensive Player of the Week, Frederick matched his rushing total of a week ago with 177 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns. He caught a pair of passes for 59 yards and one score. Frederick also returned the second-half kickoff 47 yards to set up a touchdown.

Frederick caught a 62-yard TD pass from sophomore Joseph Vairo (Coral Springs, Fla./Westminster) to cap a 75-yard drive on R-MC's first possession of the game. The Cougars (1-1) tallied a touchdown and a field goal later in the first period to take a 10-7 lead.

Sophomore Eric Hoy (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) scored on a five-yard run to finish an 80-yard drive midway through the second quarter as the Yellow Jackets took the lead for good at 14-10. Vairo found the end zone from six-yards out with 3:39 remaining and junior Seth Yurgel (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) nailed a 33-yard field goal with one second left in the half as R-MC took a 24-10 lead to the locker room at intermission.

Frederick scored on a nine-yard run in the third quarter, while Vairo and Frederick both scored on short runs in the final period as R-MC claimed the 44-10 victory.

The Yellow Jackets collected 476 yards of total offense after recording 500 a week ago. Vairo hit 12 of 16 passes for 167 yards. His favorite target was sophomore tight end Sean McDonald (Boyce, Va./Clarke County), who had five receptions for 48 yards. Vairo also had 46 yards on the ground.

Senior linebacker Michael Farry (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) topped the R-MC defense with six tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, half of a quarterback sack and one pass breakup. The Yellow Jacket defense had six tackles for loss, including five quarterback sacks. Senior Cole Burdette (Frederick, Md./Urbana) had 2.5 tackles for loss and a pair of quarterback sacks.

Randolph-Macon will host Methodist on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. at Day Field to conclude its non-conference slate.
