WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Joe McBride (Arlington, Va/Yorktown) threw for 336 yards and two touchdowns, but four turnovers doomed the Randolph-Macon football team in a 25-20 loss at Catholic Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets fell to 2-1, while the Cardinals improved to 2-1.

The R-MC defense stopped CUA on downs on the first possession of the game. The Yellow Jackets completed a pass for a first down on their initial possession, but the receiver was stripped and the Cardinals took over on the R-MC 26. CUA needed just six plays to reach the end zone, but missed the extra point to lead 6-0 with 8:50 left in the first period. Following an R-MC punt, the Cardinals moved 55 yards to record their second TD. A blocked extra point gave CUA a 12-0 lead with 5:22 left in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets drove to the CUA 14, but what looked like a touchdown catch was stolen by the defender for an interception.

In the second quarter, the Cardinals connected on a 62-yard pass on a third-and 17 from their own 13, setting up their third score of the half. CUA led 19-0 with 4:46 left in the second period. R-MC drove deep into CUA territory, having fourth-and-goal from the CUA 2. A pass into the end zone was knocked out the receiver's hands, giving the home team a 19-0 lead at the half. The Yellow Jackets ran more plays than the Cardinals (35-33), but trailed in total yards 236-164.

On its first possession of the third quarter, R-MC completed a long pass deep into CUA territory, but the ball was knocked out at the CUA 5 for a fumble, recovered by the Cardinals. Senior Ryan Burns (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) picked off a pass, giving the Yellow Jackets the ball on the CUA 25. Junior Eric Hoy (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) scored from one yard out as R-MC trailed 19-7 with 8:10 left in the third period. The Cardinals scored on the second play of the fourth quarter to take a 25-7 lead.

R-MC drove 83 yards in 10 plays on its first drive of the fourth quarter, as McBride hit junior Tre Frederick (Angier, N.C./West Johnston) on a nine-yard TD pass to make it 25-14 with 12:13 left in the final period. The Yellow Jacket defense held CUA on a three-and-out, but an interception in Cardinal territory ended the threat.

The Yellow Jackets stopped the Cardinals on downs and drove 75 yards in nine plays, as McBride connected with junior Owen Ritter (York, Pa./Dallastown) on a five-yard scoring pass. A missed two-point attempt made it 25-20 with 2:18 left.

CUA recovered the onside kick, picked up one first down, and ran out the clock to secure the victory.

McBride completed 28 of 48 passes. Hoy (51 yards) and junior Christian Redman (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) (76 yards) both had five receptions for the Yellow Jackets. Frederick had 21 carries for 91 yards.

Senior Norman Cade (Rolesville, N.C./Wake Forest) paced R-MC with 14 tackles, while sophomore Shajuan Phillips posted 10 tackles.

Following its bye week, Randolph-Macon begins ODAC action on Thursday, Sept. 28, with a 6:30 p.m. home contest against Shenandoah on Day Field.
