Estes Throws for Four Scores as R-MC Football Outscored by SU

ASHLAND, Va. - Sophomore Burke Estes (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover) threw for 381 yards and four touchdowns as the Randolph-Macon football team was outscored 51-38 by Shenandoah on Thursday evening in the ODAC opener for both squads.

Junior Tre Frederick (Angier, N.C./West Johnston) rushed for 160 yards and one score for the Yellow Jackets (2-2, 0-1 ODAC). Sophomore Trey Owens (Craven, N.C./Havelock) had six catches for 161 yards and one touchdown. Junior Eric Hoy (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) pulled in nine catches for 74 yards and two scores.

After the R-MC defense held the Hornets (3-1, 1-0 ODAC) to three-and-out on their first possession, Hoy scored on a five-yard shuffle pass from Estes to make it 7-0. SU scored on its next two possessions to take a 14-7 lead midway through the first quarter. Frederick found the end zone from seven yards out to cap a 74-yard drive as the Yellow Jackets tied the game at 14-14. The Hornets put a punt on the one-yard line and tackled R-MC in the end zone on the next play at SU took a 16-14 lead.

The Yellow Jackets reclaimed the lead midway through the second quarter as Estes hit Hoy with a 17-yard scoring pass to give the home team a 21-16 lead. It capped an 11-play, 89-yard drive that took 6:53. The Hornets would scored the final two touchdowns of the half to take a 30-21 lead at halftime.

Freshman Chris Vidal (Wake, N.C./Wake Forest) hit a 31-yard field goal with 9:31 left in the third quarter to make it a 30-24 contest. SU added two more touchdowns and led 44-24 heading to the final period.

Owens had a 26-yard TD reception early in the fourth quarter to narrow the margin to 44-31. SU returned an interception for a touchdown to give the visitors a 51-31 advantage. Junior Christian Redman (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) had a 10-yard touchdown reception with 5:29 left to make the final 51-38.

Sophomore Calvin Whitehead (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) led the Yellow Jackets with 16 tackles.

R-MC ran 76 plays for 557 total yards, compared to 80 plays by SU for 611 yards.

Randolph-Macon travels to Bridgewater for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest on Saturday, Oct. 7.
