FOREST, Va. – Randolph-Macon senior linebacker Calvin Whitehead (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) has been named the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in the Yellow Jackets' 34-21 victory at Guilford.
Whitehead tied for the team lead with 11 tackles, of which eight came in the second half. He had nine solo stops, two tackles for loss and one pass breakup. Whitehead also had the most important single play in the contest.
R-MC held a 17-14 lead at halftime. GC had won the opening coin toss and deferred. The Quakers took the second-half kickoff and drove to the R-MC 28. On 3rd and 3, GC quarterback Derrien Phillips ran around the right side and moved to the R-MC 6-yard line. Whitehead chased Phillips down from behind and knocked the ball loose. The ball rolled out of bounds through the end zone for a touchback. After taking over on their own 20, the Yellow Jackets drove 80 yards in 13 plays for a touchdown as R-MC took a 24-14 lead.
Whitehead is the second Yellow Jacket to earn ODAC Player of the Week honors this season. Senior running back Tre Frederick (Angier, N.C./West Johnston) was named ODAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15.
Randolph-Macon will host Shenandoah on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. for Homecoming.
