R-MC Field Hockey Downs VWC 2-1 In Double Overtime

ASHLAND, VA -- Carrie Jacobs connected with Rachael Gardner in double overtime to lead Randolph-Macon Field Hockey past Virginia Wesleyan College 2-1 in Ashland, Va. Sunday afternoon.

Jacobs put R-MC on the board just over two minutes into the match when she rattled the cage off of her own rebound.

The Yellow Jackets lead held until the 45th minute when VWC junior Kelly Mullahy found Courtney Copeland to tie the game at 1-1.

Strong defense from both teams kept the 1-1 tie intact for the remainder of regulation and the first 15 minute overtime period.

Gardner needed just fifty-five seconds of double overtime to receive Jacobs' pass and put the ball past the VWC goalie to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 win.

Randolph-Macon outshot Virginia Wesleyan 22-17 for the game and held a 14-8 advantage in penalty corners.

Marlins' keeper Kristen Olson stopped nine shots on goal while Yellow Jackets' goalie Nicole Woodworth made 10 saves.

R-MC Field Hockey will be back in action October 9th when they travel to Bridgewater College for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
