Turner, Stanley Lead R-MC past SMC in Overtime

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Senior Mackenzie Turner (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) scored the game-winning goal during penalty strokes and sophomore Kelsey Stanley (Bumpass, Va./Louisa County) recorded 20 saves as the Randolph-Macon field hockey team outlasted St. Mary's 3-2 Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Renee Greenslade (Hamilton, Bermuda/St. Margaret's) scored the game's first goal in the 13th minute to give the Yellow Jackets (5-2) an early 1-0 lead. It was her third goal of the season. The Seahawks (2-3) knotted the score in the 32nd minute as the teams were tied 1-1 at intermission.

Early in the second half, junior Kaitee Nicholas (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) gave R-MC a 2-1 lead on her first goal of the year, only to see St. Mary's tie it with 2:28 remaining in regulation.

The teams played a pair of scoreless 15-minute overtime periods, forcing the penalty strokes. Following the first five rounds, each team had scored twice. Turner started the sixth round with a goal and the Seahawks missed on their sixth-round attempt, giving the victory to the Yellow Jackets.

St. Mary's held a 43-9 advantage in shots, including 11-3 in the first half, 18-4 in the second half, 7-0 in the first overtime period and 7-2 in the second overtime. The R-MC defense recorded a pair of saves to go along with the 20 by Stanley.

Turner, Nicholas and senior Kali Carroll (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) each had two shots for the Yellow Jackets, with Nicholas recording a pair of shots on goal.

Randolph-Macon begins ODAC play on Saturday, Sept. 19, with a 1 p.m. home contest against Roanoke at the R-MC Field Hockey Field.
