FROSTBURG, Md. - Sophomore Jessica Cooke (Williamsburg, Va./Warhill) scored early in overtime as the Randolph-Macon field hockey team nipped Frostburg State 2-1 Friday evening in the first round of the FSU Tournament.
The Yellow Jackets picked up a victory in their season opener. The Bobcats fell to 0-3.
"I am very pleased with our composure from start to finish," said Jess Weiss, R-MC head field hockey coach. "Our work rate is what I am most proud of, though. We never stopped working for each other and that's all I can ask."
FSU started the scoring in the 19th minute to take the early lead. Senior Victoria Cappadora (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) registered the equalizer in the 23rd minute on an assist by freshman Maria Teresa Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity) to level the score at 1-1 at the end of the first half.
A scoreless second stanza sent the game to overtime tied at 1-1.
Cooke ended the contest 3:41 into overtime. Freshman Kendall Lewis (Suffolk, Va. / Lakeland) assisted on the game-winner.
R-MC held a 13-5 advantage in shots, including 8-3 in shots on goal. Cooke paced the victors with six shots, including four shots on goal. Cappadora had a pair of shots, of which one was on goal.
Sophomore Katie Thompson (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) recorded a pair of saves for the Yellow Jackets, with one coming in each half.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. against Ohio Wesleyan on the second day of the FSU Tournament.
