ASHLAND, Va. – Freshmen Madison McCoy (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and Austyn Faries (Richmond, Va./Monacan) both tallied goals as did sophomore Tina Staley (North Beach, Md./Northern) as the Randolph-Macon field hockey team posted a 3-1 victory over Wilson on Tuesday afternoon at the R-MC Field Hockey Field.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 3-2, while the Phoenix fell to 3-3.
McCoy scored on a shot just inside the left post with 14:50 elapsed in the game as R-MC took a 1-0 lead. It was her first collegiate goal. Six minutes later, Staley finished in front of the box on an assist by freshman Kathleen Tanner (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 advantage 21 minutes into the contest. R-MC would take that 2-0 lead into intermission.
Wilson broke through with a goal with 7:38 left in regulation to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. But the Yellow Jackets answered just over a minute later as Faries recorded her second goal of the season on a pass from freshman Maria Teresa Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity) to make the final 3-1.
R-MC held a 17-5 advantage on shots, including 12-2 in the first half. Senior Victoria Cappadora (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) paced the victors with four shots, while Faries and freshman Georgia Drescher (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) both added three shots. All three of Faries' shots were on goal.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 21, with a 7:30 p.m. home contest against Christopher Newport. The game will be played on Day Field.
