ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon field hockey will host ten matches this season -- all at Day Field -- including the first five in a row. The heavy home schedule includes home matches against two NCAA Tournament teams last season.
"We want to compete in November and our 2018 schedule sets an ultra-competitive tone from the start," said head field hockey coach Jess Weiss.
The season begins on August 31st as R-MC hosts McDaniel at 4:30 PM. R-MC will welcome two straight Capital Athletic Conference members, St. Mary's and Frostburg State on September 5 and September 9 respectively. Johns Hopkins, a regionally ranked team last season, will visit Day Field on Tuesday, September 11 at 7:30 PM followed by Goucher on Saturday, September 15 at 6:00 PM. R-MC will then head to Christopher Newport on Wednesday, September 19 for a 7:00 PM match. CNU was a NCAA Tournament participant and was regionally and nationally ranked last season.
"The ODAC is extremely competitive and the best way to thrive in that environment is by building a challenging out-of-conference schedule," Weiss said.
The conference schedule begins with a game in Salem against Roanoke on Saturday, September 29 at 1:00. Roanoke defeated R-MC in the first round of the ODAC Tournament last fall.
"We have no time to waste in preparing for them," Weiss said.
The day after opening the ODAC season, R-MC will travel to Newport News to face Concordia University – Wisconsin on the campus of Christopher Newport. The non-conference slate continues with a return to Day Field on Wednesday, October 3 against Mary Washington at 7:30. The home stand concludes with ODAC foes Lynchburg on Saturday, October 6 at 6:00 PM and Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, October 10 at 7:30 PM.
R-MC then hits the road for an ODAC match at Bridgewater on Friday, October 12 at 6:00 PM and will face the Rhodes Lynx in Fredericksburg on Sunday, October 14 at noon on the campus of Mary Washington. Rhodes, which Weiss called a strong Midwest Region team, went 12-5 last year.
From there, R-MC competes against ODAC rivals from there out. The team returns home to face Washington and Lee, a NCAA Tournament participant and a team ranked in the region last year. That game begins at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, October 17. R-MC will close the season's home slate out against Shenandoah on Friday, October 19 at 7:00 PM.
R-MC will travel to Eastern Mennonite and Ferrum on October 24 and October 26 to finish out the seasons' schedule.
"I am confident this team is ready to tackle that challenge and any others that come our way," Weiss said of the competitive 2018 schedule.
Weiss will begin her third year in 2018 and will look to continue upon the improvement that she's made since she arrived – which have included the first ODAC Tournament appearance for R-MC Field Hockey since 2014 and a doubling of the program's win total from 2016 to 2017. Weiss's program development includes a large sophomore class and three juniors, who will be team leaders, as the 2018 squad will feature no seniors.
