FOREST, Va. – Randolph-Macon field hockey has arrived in fifth in the 2018 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's head coaches and announced by the conference Friday afternoon. R-MC finished 2017 with an appearance in the ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
Washington and Lee leads the pack with 62 points while the University of Lynchburg and Roanoke College round out the top three. Shenandoah sits in fourth. Bridgewater, Virginia Wesleyan, Eastern Mennonite and newcomer Ferrum round out the nine team field. R-MC got wins over VWU and Eastern Mennonite last year, in addition to Ferrum, which joins the ODAC from the USA South Conference.
R-MC returns two All-ODAC selections from last year. Sophomore Georgia Drescher (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) was voted to the All-ODAC Second Team in 2017. Drescher finished last season with a goal and two assists, but her real impact was felt through the middle of the field, where she stood tall against attacking opponents while also ensuring that her fellow teammates got quality passes and scoring chances. Her selection to the All-ODAC Second Team is the highest honor for a freshman since Carrie Jacobs in 2011.
Sophomore Maria Teresa Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) is also a key returner, having been selected to the All-ODAC Third Team last season. Ambrogi-Torres scored the second-most goals on the team with seven and led the team in assists with five. Her total assists were a top ten mark in the ODAC in 2017.
Head Coach Jess Weiss will again helm the Yellow Jackets in 2018. Since her arrival, Weiss has doubled the win total of the field hockey program over her first two seasons and led the team to its first appearance in the ODAC Tournament since 2014.
The season gets started with five straight home matches, beginning on Friday, August 31 against McDaniel at 4:30. All of R-MC's home dates in 2018 will take place on Day Field.
