Simon, Holmes Help R-MC Dominate No. 16 Virginia Wesleyan

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Andre Simon (Newport News, Va./Menchville) led all scorers with 23 points as Randolph-Macon routed No. 16 Virginia Wesleyan 78-62 Wednesday evening in ODAC men's basketball action in front of 1,007 fans at Crenshaw Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets (12-4, 6-1 ODAC) remain in a first-place tie in the ODAC standings with Guilford following its victory over Hampden-Sydney. R-MC has won eight straight and 11 of its past 12 contests.

Simon also pulled down seven rebounds. Junior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) had 17 points and eight rebounds off the bench for R-MC.

The Marlins (12-4, 5-2 ODAC) controlled the game early, taking a 22-16 lead just past the halfway point of the first half. The Yellow Jackets scored seven straight, as a free throw by junior Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) game R-MC its first lead at 23-22 with just under eight minutes remaining in the period. The home team would not trail again. The run extended to 20-5 as the Yellow Jackets led 36-27 with two minutes remaining in the half. R-MC took a 38-31 advantage to the locker room at the break.

Junior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) hit a three-pointer on R-MC's first possession of the second half and the home team would keep a double-figure lead the rest of the way. A 19-6 run to start the second stanza gave the Yellow Jackets a 57-37 lead with 12 minutes remaining. The lead grew to as much as two dozen (68-44) before R-MC beat the 16th-ranked Marlins by 16 in its 16th game of the season.

Simon had 15 of his 23 points in the second half. R-MC shot 54.4% from the floor (31-57), as Simon went 9 for 12 and Holmes was 8 for 10. Sullivan finished with 13 points for the Yellow Jackets.

R-MC held the Marlins to 36% shooting from the floor. The league's top three-point shooting team was just 4 for 19 (21.1%) from behind the arc. The Yellow Jackets held VWC to its lowest point total of the season.
