Hassell Helps No. 5 R-MC Outlast W&L

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) scored six of his team-high 18 points in overtime as the fifth-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team pulled out an 82-77 ODAC victory at Washington and Lee Saturday afternoon to extend its win streak to 16 games.

Hassell had 11 rebounds to record his fourth double-double of the season. He also had a career-best four steals.

Hassell scored on a stick-back on the first possession of overtime and the Yellow Jackets (19-2, 12-0 ODAC) never trailed in the extra period. Hassell hit a jumper with 3:15 remaining and made a layup with 2:20 left as R-MC took a 75-50 lead. The Generals (8-13, 5-7 ODAC) pulled within two at 78-76 with 25 seconds remaining before seniors Evan Jackson (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) and Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) each sank a pair of free throws to secure the win.

R-MC held a slim 13-11 lead seven minutes into the contest before using a 19-2 run to assume a 32-13 advantage with 8:30 left in the half. The lead stayed in double figures through the rest of the period and the Yellow Jackets took a 43-27 advantage to the locker room at halftime. Freshman Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) went 3 for 3 from behind the arc for nine points. Senior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) and junior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) both tallied eight. R-MC went 9 for 16 on three-pointers in the first half.

W&L started the second half on an 18-8 run in the first eight minutes to narrow the deficit to six at 51-45. Clayton Murtha converted a three-point play with just under five minutes remaining to give the Generals a 62-61 edge. Badger made a pair of free throws with 54 seconds left to put the Yellow Jackets on top 68-66. Patrick O'Connor converted two foul shots with 40 seconds remaining to even the score at 68-68, the eighth tie of the contest. Hamilton missed a trey with 11 seconds left. Hassell was fouled on the rebound and missed both free throws with eight seconds left. Murtha missed a jumper just before the horn to force the extra period.

Moore finished 14 points and Badger added 12, going 8 for 10 from the charity stripe.

Murtha led all scorers with 31 points.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 9 p.m. for a home ODAC contest against Hampden-Sydney. The game will be televised in the Richmond area on WTVR, CBS 6.3 as well as COX 11 in Hampton Roads, COX 9 in Roanoke, COX 74 in Fairfax and COX 77 in Fredericksburg.
