EMORY, Va. – Senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) recorded his fourth double-double in the past five games with 19 points and 11 rebounds as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team handled Emory & Henry 82-63 in ODAC action Saturday afternoon to extend its school-record win streak to 20 games.
Hassell hit seven field goals, sank both three-point attempts and went 3 for 4 from the free throw line.
The Yellow Jackets (23-2, 16-0 ODAC) scored the first 10 points of the contest, including five by Hassell, and never trailed. The Wasps (5-20, 4-12 ODAC) tallied the next points to knot the score at 10. R-MC held a one-point lead at 18-17 before a 10-2 spurt gave the visitors a 28-19 advantage with seven minutes left in the period. The margin shrunk to three at 31-28 before a 10-1 run made it 41-29 with one minute remaining. A three-pointer by E&H made it 41-32 at Intermission. Hassell had 15 points and five boards in the first half.
R-MC maintained a double-figure lead through most of the second half. The margin grew to 24 at 68-44 midway through the period before posting the 82-63 win.
Freshman Rip Engel (New Town, Pa./Life Center Academy) scored a career-high 12, going 4 for 6 on three-pointers. Senior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) hit three treys for nine points. The Yellow Jackets were 13 for 25 from behind the arc (52.0%).
Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) had six points and five assists for the R-MC.
The Yellow Jackets finished 16-0 in ODAC play for the first time in program history.
Brandon Self led the Wasps with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Randolph-Macon has concluded its regular season and will be the top seed in the ODAC Tournament. The Yellow Jackets will play a quarterfinal match on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 1 pm in Salem, Va.
