ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) recorded his second double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outscored Wesley 88-78 Tuesday evening in Crenshaw Gymnasium to win the championship of the R-MC Coaches Tournament sponsored by Kay Jewelers.
Moore hit four field goals and went 9 for 14 from the free throw line. He also had three assists and two steals. Moore was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Junior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) matched his career high with 18 points. He also dished out five assists and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) tallied 15 off the bench.
The Yellow Jackets (4-6) jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead before the Wolverines (3-7) scored five straight to pull within two with 17:25 left in the first half. R-MC put together a dominating 30-6 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 37-11 lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the half. The lead grew to 27 at 41-14 with 5:30 left before the home team took a 47-26 lead at intermission. Wilson and Silverthorn both had 12 points in the first period.
R-MC was able to maintain a double-figure lead through most of the second half. Wesley cut the deficit to nine at 80-71 with 1:01 left and to seven at 81-74 with 47 seconds remaining. The Yellow Jackets made seven of their final eight free throws, including 4 for 4 by Wilson, as R-MC put away the 88-78 victory.
The Yellow Jackets shot 50% (28-56) from the floor in the game and 43.8% (7 for 16) from beyond the arc. R-MC won consecutive games for the first time this season.
Randolph-Macon returns to ODAC action on Saturday, January 2 at 2 p.m., hosting Guilford in Crenshaw Gym.
