HARRISONBURG, Va. – Freshman Jon Nowell (Riverdale, Ga./Blair Academy) scored a career-high 16 and sophomore Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) had his second double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team dropped a 73-71 decision at Eastern Mennonite in ODAC action Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (10-10, 6-5 ODAC) had four score in double figures. Freshman Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) had 13 points and three steals off the bench, while junior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) had 12 points and six boards.
The Royals (9-11, 4-8 ODAC) jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead before a jumper by Nowell capped an 8-0 run as R-MC took an 11-8 advantage with 10:35 remaining in the first half. EMU tied it at 15 before a layup by Noe finished a 9-0 run as the Yellow Jackets led 24-15 with five minutes left in the period. The Royals ended the half on a 10-6 spurt as R-MC led 30-25 at intermission. Nowell paced the visitors with 10 first-half points.
EMU pulled within two at 39-37 five minutes into the second period before Midulla hit a pair of three-pointers in a 10-0 run as R-MC took its largest lead at 49-37 with 12:20 remaining. The Royals had a 15-4 spurt to make it a one-point contest at 53-52 with seven minutes remaining. Nowell and Noe sandwiched layups around an EMU free throw as the Yellow Jackets led 57-53 with 5:30 left. A 7-2 stretch for the Royals gave them a 60-59 lead with 4:20 remaining. The score was tied at 63 with three minutes to go. Senior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) sank a pair of free throws with 2:44 left to give R-MC its final lead at 65-63. EMU had two buckets and two free throws to take a 71-67 lead with 34 seconds left. The Royals had a five-point lead at 73-68 with 12 seconds left before junior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) nailed a three-pointer with five seconds left to make it 73-71. EMU missed a pair of foul shots one second later, but R-MC could not get off a shot before the final buzzer.
Moore finished with eight points and two assists.
Randolph-Macon stays on the road, playing an ODAC contest at Washington and Lee on Monday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
