CHESTER, Pa. – The Randolph-Macon men's soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 victory over Widener on Thursday afternoon. The goals came from freshman Andrew Griggs (Galloway, N.J./ Absegami) in the eighth minute of the game and junior Bryan Lutz (Fairfax, Va./ W.T. Woodson) with just three minutes remaining, both goals were assisted by senior Logan McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./ West Nottingham Academy).
Randolph-Macon took the lead in the eighth minute of the game from a corner kick. McHugh, who was the points leader in 2015 for the Yellow Jackets, recorded the assist when he delivered a corner from the right side that was headed in the back of the net by Griggs.
Sophomore goalkeeper, Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va./ W.T. Woodson), made a crucial save in the first half from a Widener free kick, just outside the 18 yard box. He would go on to record five saves and a shutout on the day.
The Yellow Jackets would double their lead in the 87th minute. McHugh provided his second assist of the game as Lutz scored his first goal of the season to give Randolph-Macon a 2-0 lead.
The Randolph-Macon defensive back line of junior Jake Tyler (Colonial Heights, Va./ Colonial Heights), junior Jack Maxey (Salem, Va./ Salem), junior Jacob McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./ West Nottingham Academy), freshman Paul Duffy (Salem, Va./ Salem) and second half substitute sophomore Peyton Chichester, defended tirelessly and were able to hold the Pride to just five shots on goal and were able to record a clean sheet.
The Yellow Jackets held 17-9 advantage on shots over Widener. McHugh, Lutz and senior Sam Bowen (Collegeville, Pa./ The Haverford School) led the team in shots with three each.
Randolph-Macon will have its first home match of the 2016 season on Saturday. Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. where it will host Stevenson.
