ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's soccer team came up short in a 3-2 loss to Eastern Mennonite. R-MC took the lead in the first half through junior Liam Hogan (Haymarket, Va./ Battlefield) but were unable to overtake the Royals.
Just five minutes into the game, R-MC took the lead. Freshman Anthony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va./ Benedictine) laid the ball off to Hogan inside the box, who then slotted the ball in the corner. That marked Hogan's first goal as a Yellow Jacket.
The game saw both teams shift momentum and dominate spells of the game. In the space of two minutes, EMU would take the lead. In the 30th minute Dominic Powers scored from close range to level the score. Then just 70 seconds later, EMU took the lead through Parker Leap.
Junior Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va./ W.T. Woodson) made a crucial save on a breakaway to prevent EMU from pulling ahead further. Breslin made two saves in the game.
The second half saw the momentum swing back in favor of the Yellow Jackets. R-MC took 13 shots in the second half, with EMU only taking three.
The immense pressure did end up paying off for the Yellow Jackets in the 69th minute. From senior Logan McHugh's (Aberdeen, Md./ West Nottingham Academy) corner kick, the ball bounced around in the box before sophomore Peyton Chichester (Richmond, Va./ James River) was able to force the ball over the line, making the score 2-2. Chichester also scored his first collegiate goal for the Yellow Jackets.
With just five minute remaining and both teams searching for the winner, EMU were able to find the deciding goal. Daniel Obour picked up a deflected shot in the box and scored to give the Royals the win.
The Yellow Jackets fall to 9-3-2 and 5-2 in ODAC, while EMU improves to 7-7-4 and 2-3-2 in the ODAC.
Before the match the graduating seniors of the R-MC men's soccer team were recognized. The R-MC soccer team will be graduating seven seniors in: Jack Maxey (Salem, Va./ Salem), Bryon Eubanks (Mechanicsville, Va./ Hanover), Logan McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./ West Nottingham Academy), Matt Houle (Charleston, S.C./ Academic Magnet), Sam Bowen (Collegeville, Pa./ The Haverford School), Tyler Slayton (Mechanicsville, Va./ Hanover) and Kevin Bachouros (Midlothian, Va./ Cosby).
R-MC will be back on the field on Wednesday, October 26th when it travels to Va. Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
