LYNCHBURG, Va. – The number four seeded Randolph-Macon men's soccer team were defeated 1-0 in overtime in the ODAC semifinals by number one Lynchburg. Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va./ W.T. Woodson) had an outstanding game in goal and made six saves in the game.
With the loss, R-MC finish the season 10-5-3 and 5-3-1 in the ODAC. R-MC advanced to the semifinal for the first time in 13 seasons.
Lynchburg came out hot in the first half, but Breslin and the defensive line of freshman Paul Duffy (Salem, Va./ Salem) senior Jack Maxey (Salem, Va./ Salem), junior Jacob McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./ West Nottingham Academy) and freshman Isaac Myers (Littlestown, Pa./ Gettysburg Area) were able to hold the Hornets scoreless throughout the first half and full 90 minutes.
R-MC dominated the second half of the game. Senior Logan McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./ West Nottingham Academy) and junior Liam Hogan (Haymarket, Va./ Battlefield) orchestrated the offense through the middle of the field.
The Yellow Jackets outshot Lynchburg 8-3 in the second half. Hogan had four shots, all of which were on goal.
With one second remaining in regulation, Breslin made a crucial save off a corner to send the game to overtime.
Just two minutes into sudden victory overtime, Lycnburg scored the winner. Collin Kashmer scored the winner from an assist off of Ben Grossufuss to put the Hornets in the finals.
In the latest poll by D3soccer.com, Lynchburg were ranked 17th by coaches and sports information directors across the country.
Logan McHugh finished as the points leader for the Yellow Jackets with 15 (four goals, seven assists). Freshman Antony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va./ Benedictine) was the leading goal scorer for R-MC in his first season with six.
