R-MC Wins First Outing of Year

Ashland, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's soccer team won its first game of the 2017 campaign 4-0 against the Wesley College Wolverines. The game was the first game of the Yellow Jacket Classic. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Wolverines 19-4 and held Wesley to no shots in the first half.

The defensive effort was led by goalkeeper junior Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson), who saved all of the shots (3) pushed his way. Breslin served as the keeper for the entire match.

R-MC's offense was opened up in the 13th minute by senior Bryan Lutz (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) who slipped a goal past the keeper to the bottom corner. Lutz was one of the top scorers in 2016 for the Yellow Jackets. He had three shots, all of them on goal in the match.

Just seconds before the first half was set to close, sophomore Paul Duffy (Salem, Va./Salem) pushed a goal towards the back post after getting the pass from junior Peyton Chichester (Richmond, Va./James River), who got the assist alongside Jacob McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./West Nottingham Academy).

R-MC continued the scoring in the second half when sophomore Anthony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va./Benedictine) swung the shot in, getting past the Wesley keeper on the far post. Astruc was also a leading scorer in 2016 and led the teams in shots against WC, shooting four times in the match.

Astruc was involved in the second goal of the half, getting the assist as he sent the pass from the left side of the box to fellow sophomore Andrew Griggs (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) who sent it in to the net at the far post.

The second game of the Classic between Neumann University and Virginia Wesleyan University was cancelled due to weather. The game had been moved to Striker Park after being slated to be played in Ashland.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Saturday against Neumann University at 4:00 P.M. Due to field conditions at the R-MC soccer field, the game will be moved to Striker Park in Glen Allen.
