HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Randolph-Macon scored in each half while only allowing one goal to Hampden-Sydney in a 2-1 victory Wednesday night. The win pushes R-MC to 9-1 on the season and 2-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. The Yellow Jackets also moved up one spot in this week's United Soccer Coaches Division III South Atlantic Region poll to #9. The team has spent the last two weeks as #10.
Sophomore Paul Duffy (Salem, Va./Salem) scored his second goal of the season in the 18th minute. The goal was not assisted. It was Duffy's only shot of the match
Up 1-0 at halftime, Randolph-Macon scored again nearly nine minutes into the second half to go up by two goals. Sophomore Andrew Griggs (Galloway, N.J. / Absegami) fed a ball to senior Bryan Lutz (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) and Lutz scored it, tallying his sixth goal of 2017. It was Griggs' second assist of the season.
H-SC got one goal back in the 68th minute, but that was all they could muster as junior goalkeeper Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) saved four other shots on goal in the second half, including one in the 88th minute.
The Tigers didn't get a shot on goal in the entire first half and only took four shots total. The Yellow Jackets took 15 shots total, though only three came in the second half. Sophomore Anthony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va./Benedictine) was R-MC's shot leader, taking three tries with two coming on goal. Griggs, Lutz and junior Peyton Chichester (Richmond, Va./James River) each had two shots as well.
R-MC also held the corner kick advantage 9-5.
Randolph-Macon continues the road trip at Emory & Henry on Saturday at 3:00 PM. The team returns home against Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday, October 10 at 4:00 PM.
