Yellow Jackets Tally Ninth Shutout, Defeat Marlins 4-0

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's soccer team recorded its ninth shutout and 11th win of the 2017 campaign with a 4-0 victory over the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins in a Tuesday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference match in Ashland.

The first goal came quickly – four minutes into the match. Sophomore Christian Torres (Stafford, Va./C.D. Hylton) drew the VWU keeper away from the goal where he mishandled it allowing Torres to shoot into an empty net. It marked Torres' first goal of the season.

R-MC continued the offense in the first half as in the 26th minute, senior Bryan Lutz (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) sent the ball to the far post past the keeper after getting a through ball from sophomore Andrew Griggs (Galloway, N.J. / Absegami). It was Lutz's seventh goal of the season, tying him for the top spot in the ODAC for goals scored. He also leads the league in points scored with 16. Griggs tallied his fourth assist taking the team lead and tying him atop the ODAC leaderboard in that category as well, along with five other ODAC student-athletes.

Less than ten minutes later, junior Peyton Chichester (Richmond, Va. / James River) turned the ball into the goal following a corner kick into the box. It was Chichester's first goal of the season.

Chichester took 3 shots with two of them falling on goal in the first half. They were a trio of 14 shots for R-MC in the half. Griggs had two as well as senior Peter Nelson (Charleston, WV / George Washington). Seven other Yellow Jackets tried a shot and nine of the 14 were on goal. Defensively, R-MC only allowed six shots and only two came on goal with both coming in rapid succession. Both were saved by senior Jake Tyler (Colonial Heights, VA / Colonial Heights).

The R-MC defense did not allow any other shots to fall on goal in the half. The team also did not allow VWU to have a corner kick in the first frame.  Both teams were very disciplined in the first half with Va. Wesleyan only drawing two fouls while R-MC was charged with just one.

Once again, the R-MC bench came through huge for the team, tallying important minutes in the first half and being responsible for two shots, both on goal, one by sophomore Josh Beeker (Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) and one by sophomore Matt Whelan (Elkridge, Md. / Mount St. Joseph).

Nelson was responsible for the only goal of the second half. It came in the 63rd minute as the senior stuck it into the back post after a flick over from Lutz. It marked Nelson's second goal in two games, his only two of the season and Lutz recorded his second assist of 2017.

Randolph-Macon finished the game with 21 shots with 12 coming on goal compared to 11 and four for Va. Wesleyan. Chichester, Nelson and sophomore Anthony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va. / Benedictine) led the team with three shots each Chichester, Griggs and sophomore Paul Duffy (Salem, Va. / Salem) led the team with two shots on goal each.

Junior goalkeeper Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) saved two shots in the second have and recorded another game without a goal being charged against him. He is second in the ODAC in both the goals against and the goals against average categories.

Thirteen different players came off the bench for Randolph-Macon in the match and were responsible for a total of five shots and three shots on goal.

Randolph-Macon moves to 11-1 on the season and 4-1 in the ODAC. The team heads to take on Eastern Mennonite on Saturday at 7:00 PM in Harrisonburg. They return home next Tuesday to play Shenandoah at 7:00 PM on Day Field. The game will mark Senior Day for the Yellow Jackets.
